Level 1: You feel powerless. You feel that you're a victim of circumstance. Perhaps you've tried to progress your career or move on, but you haven't been able to work out exactly how. The problem with this level is that you focus on the negatives. You feel powerless. “All this is happening to me. I don't feel like I have any control over the situation.” As a result, the level of influence you have is extremely low.
Level 2: Get clear on your purpose. You've identified why you're here, why you do what you do and what you want to be doing. What legacy do you want to leave? How do you want to impact others? At this level, your focus needs to be on winning. Small victories and wins are important: “What are the things I do really well? I do have strengths. I do have skills. I do have abilities. My problem is that I'm probably not very good at selling them. If I focus on winning rather than losing, then I can start to work out what it is that I bring.” Once you realise this, you can start positioning yourself.
Level 3: Powerful positioning. Positioning is about being clear on what you want to be known for in your organisation and industry. This means tapping into your values and thinking about who you want to be at your most fully self-expressed. You may fulfil a certain role, such as company accountant or chief financial officer. But there’s part of you that makes you truly unique in that role. You might be exceptionally caring, or you may show initiative that far exceeds your peers. That quality is what makes you unique in that role unique. Once you can identify your values and who you are, you can set yourself apart from the competition. At this point, your confidence starts to come to life.
Another important aspect of positioning is that it helps you not only identify what you need to do more of, but what you need to remove. This can increase your level of power. Often, people spend too much time looking after everybody else. To enhance your power, you need to value yourself and your time. Think about how the way you spend your time and value yourself determines the results you get. Once you prioritise yourself, your level of influence starts to rise.
Level 4: High performance. You’re starting to see progress in terms of your performance and the performance of your team. You’re also looking after yourself and feeling better about yourself. This means you’re more comfortable with increasing your visibility. You’re getting more involved, making yourself more visible at certain places. You don't necessarily have to be talking at this stage, but it’s important you connect with more people to build your online and offline networks. Think about where you are visible. Do you attend conferences? Do you need to get involved in more work events? Or do you continue to avoid those things because you don't feel good enough? At this level, you're about halfway to reaching your power potential.
Level 5: Presence. When you’re visible, you suddenly have more presence. At this level, now that we can see you, we need to be able to hear you. Your voice is one of the most powerful ways to bring essence into your work. It also brings a lot of power. It helps people connect with you at an authentic level, and it helps people identify the essence of who you are. There's a lot of trust in the tone of your voice. This means you need to get more cut through with your communication so that, ultimately, you have far more influence. You need to speak at events, externally and internally, and ensure you're in positions or projects where you have a voice. Then, you’ll be well and truly on the way to having more influence.
Level 6: Power. Now you’re really starting to step into your power. And when you step into your power, you are at your most fully self-expressed. You have a positive mindset. You’ve removed any negativity. You are focused on levelling or raising your vibration. Your vibration is about shifting from fear to fulfilment, to love, trust, faith and belief in yourself. And once you've got that vibration, that ripple will roll out to others. At this level, you have as much influence and power as you possibly can.
